Hey everyone I'm giving thought to maybe trying to buy a small log loader trailer to haul firewood and occasional saw logs off my wood lots and possibly from other sources of wood to.
I know a few members have them on here and was wondering how they are as far as lifting capacity and durability and does the company stand behind the machine. I have a older one ton dump truck with break control that would be pulling it. Not sure what the dealer will quote me but are they worth the money? I seem to always have a problem with moving the wood out of the landings when I need it to do to having to rely on on other people.
My opinion: assuming you mean a tow behind small trailer with loader I really don't get them at the cost of one you could not make any money on any distance. I think a wheeler or triaxle would do better, BUT the cost of keeping wheeler on the road is horrible compared to the trailer thing.
BUT if you go over lbs you need CDL A and there are some laws and insurance on them compared to say a snowmobile trailer. Some guys have them and they are a good rig for dub around stuff. I would look long and hard at the cost vrs hiring a truck or is it worth getting your own truck? I've seen this 10,lb trailer cdl deal before. Under Maine law, you must have a CDL to operate any of the following vehicles: Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26, or more pounds, provided the gross vehicle weight rating or gross weight of the vehicle or vehicles being towed is in excess of 10, pounds.
Simply, only over lbs truck or combined truck and trailer greater than do you need CDL. For Maine at least. ThomasTimberjack C, Ford with Norse winch, stihl saws and acres to manage.
Don't you already have a small single axle log truck? I have always thought that a skidloader or other type loader is much handier and a ton cheaper. Any vehicle over 26, you need CDL B. Any combo over 26, you need CDL A but not tractor trailer or air brakes unless so out fitted. I have a blue ox at 14, lbs and a CDL A. My insurance is way below a log truck and I can haul nearly the same as a small log truck and still have the dump for other uses.
This was and still is the right choice for me in a making money non hobby situation. I have an Anderson M lb full extension capacity. Bought it used and have had it a couple years. The trailer has a GVW of lbs. I use it as a forwarder behind the tractor more than it being used on the road.
I find it very handy but would have had a hard time justifying the price of a new one.
Hey Logman81, I thought you bought a single axle International grapple truck a while back. I think they start at 23k,are they trouble free? Yes the trailer and loader have been very reliable.Started by logman81 on Forestry and Logging. Started by charlieh on Forestry and Logging. Welcome, Guest. Please login or register. I've been kicking around the idea of putting together a grapple trailer that I can tow with my pickup.
Was wondering who has one and what brand is it. I'm thinking about finding a nice 14k lb deck over trailer and mounting a small log loader to it similar to blue ox, metavic jms brands. I can think of many task that I would use it and have wanting to put one together for a long time. I would want a flat deck so i could haul a small skidder or tractor if needed. I would want a longer reach to around 16'' reach.
Not quite thru the bed, but after a year or so of occasional use the back end of the truck got VERY soft. Pretty sure you have a thread discussing this already. Mines a jms. Decent loader. I tow with a dually one ton diesel.
Id be scared towing with a single wheel one ton, fyi. Think gooseneck if going that route. I have a anderson with a 14k dump trailer.
I have a JMS purchased through Baileys. Hidden Acres Farm Been there, done that. Dr buck that's what I want to put together. I want to buy a loader and mount it to a trailer of my own. How does that truck handle towing the trailer? Quote from: logman81 on October 29,PM.Chargeuse JMS - JMS Loader

Many of the structural solutions used in the loaders are based on heavy-duty professional cranes used in trucks and forest machines, which makes KESLA an extraordinarily durable and reliable partner for forest work. The larger models starting from have a wide-angle joint that enables stable lifting power in all boom positions.
The hydraulics are well-protected on top of the booms. In machines with double extenders, the hoses run neatly and well-protected on roller guides. Reliable rotator with unlimited slewing.
Swingdamper as standard in the bigger loaders. The combination is sturdier with stabilizers that usually come with the loader. The design of stabilizers is well thought. In Addition to A-frame telescopic stabilizers, flapdown models for difficult conditions are available.
An extensive selection of high-quality control valves; mechanical, hydraulic or electric. The extender provides plenty of extra reach. The selection includes models with both single and double extenders. Features: wide jaws, optimal geometry, plenty of compressive force. Any current controlled electric control valve, such as Parker or Walvoil can be used as the control valve. The new control system is very convenient to use due to its individually adjustable operating speeds and quick response time.
Individual settings can be saved for several people. A new type of joystick is ergonomically designed and the control system itself has many user-friendly features. The different activities of these two businesses are conveniently spread across the year — the farm work is largely done in summer, leaving the winter months for forestry.
